Recycling Old T-Shirts

We seem to collect more t-shirts than any other article of clothing.  The kids get t-shirts from different contests at school and from sporting events.  My husband is also a webmaster so it seems that every affilitate programs he works with is sending a new t-shirt every month.  And I have a hard time passing up on the end of season sales.  Who would not buy a t-shirt if it were maked down to only 2.00?  I should but don't.  Many of the extra t-shirts we donate to charity, but some of our favorites we try to recycle. A lot of the recycling decisions regarding the old t-shirts have to do with the reason they are no longer on the "A" list of clothing.  Do they have a stain?  Is there a little hole?  Did a seam come unstitched?  Is the color fading? Is is so last year that your friends refuse to go out with you if you wear it? If you have some jean recycling ideas, please email me at allisonray@gmail.com.

Recycling old t-shirts idea #1: Make a t-shirt dress.  My twins have a ton of these dresses.  I just love to make them because the children's dresses sew up in about 20 minutes. You basically cut the t-shirt about 2 to 3 inches under the arm pit and then just serge on a skirt.  You can vary how long you want the skirt to be.  I always make mine longer so as the girls grow they can get more wear out of the dresses.  If you start with short as they grow they will become too short.  For a free adult t-shirt dress pattern click here.

Recycling old t-shirts idea #2:
Make a skirt from an old t-shirt or sweat shirt.  Click here for a free recycled skirt pattern.

Recycling old t-shirts idea #3: Cut up the old t-shirts for wash rags.

Recycling old t-shirts idea #4: Make a pair of t-shirt panties or a pair of t-shirt boxer shorts.  Click here for a free pattern to recycle shirts into underwear.

Recycling old t-shirts idea #5: Make a t-shirt full body pillow.  This makes a great craft to do at a party for young kids or teens.  Girls and Boys have fun making creative pillows from thier old t-shirts.  It's pretty easy.  Make any embellishments to the shirt you would like then stitch the arm holes, neck hole and bottom of shirt closed.  After stuffing it of course.  If you want to take it to the next level- stuff organic t-shirts with organic batting or wool batting.

Recycling old t-shirts idea #6: Make a t-shirt small pillow.  These are great to make from your favorite t-shirts that you kid's refuse to part with.  Cut the center of the t-shirt or just the design section of the shirt and place the right sides together, stitch all four sides, leaving a little hole to turn right side out and stuff.  Then stitch up the hole. For a free recycled t-shirt pillow pattern click here.

Recycling old t-shirts idea #7: Make t-shirt diapers for your baby or to donate to charity.  Click here for a free t-shirt diaper pattern.

Recycling old t-shirts idea #8:
Make a t-shirt "memory" qult.  Collect old t-shirts and cut them up into squares or cut them up according to the design on the front and quilt. Click here for free t-shirt quilt pattern.

Recycling old t-shirts idea #9: Make t-shirt car seat covers.  These are really nice to have in the summer months and if you have small messy children (like me).  Just pull the t-shirt over the back of the seat and pull the head rest through the neck hold and whola..you have a new seat cover that you can take of and wash any time.

Recycling old t-shirts idea #10: Quilt several t-shirts together to make a nice long, soft, comfy night gown.

Recycling old t-shirts idea #11: Recycle an old faded t-shirt by...Having a tye-dye party.  Invite your friends to bring an old t-shirt and a bottle of RIT dye. Mix the colors in large wash buckets outside, band up with rubber bands and craft away! This is a fun way to recycle some old t-shirts and to create some new memories.
